Lingerie

Posted on: August 31, 2011

Lingerie is a term used for women's undergarments that are made from silk, satin, lace, lycra, and nylon. Before lingerie became a part of visual stimuli, it's purpose in the first half of the twentieth century was to aid in the shape of the woman's body, create an aspect of modesty, and improve hygiene. It wasn't until the 1960's that the idea of eroticism (See: sexy lingerie) would arise from lingerie.

Lingerie Gets Sexy

In 1946, Frederick Mellinger opened a lingerie shop on Hollywood Boulevard called Frederick's of Hollywood. This would be the beginning of the revolution of lingerie as more than just something to hide "under your garments". From bras to panties to corsets, the shop put sexy in the minds of lingerie buyers. In the 1950's, pin-up model Bettie Page wore lingerie from the Frederick's store.
